So, you have become your own information system/tech support team, have you? Your first project is to set up your Wi-Fi system to link your laptop and tablet to your wireless network. You can do it. And you’ll probably live to tell the tale. For the purposes of these directions, it is assumed that you already have a modem and router set up: you are only connecting your laptop and tablet/tab.

1. Start by choosing a central location where you can easily access the components during setup. To maximize the signal, your wireless DSL or cable modem should be placed in a central location in your house, on a smooth, level surface above floor. It also should be situated away from windows and metal surfaces (computer cases, cabinets, etc.).
2. For easy setup purposes, place your laptop near the wireless modem. Placing your laptop near the modem during setup will give your devices the strongest signal path when your laptop first connects to the modem. The modem’s signal should be able to reach to most rooms throughout your house and you should be able to work online from any location after you’ve completed the setup process.
3. Power on the modem first, then the laptop, and click on the Network (it looks like a bar graph) icon located in the notification area of the desktop, usually beside your computer’s time/date.
4. After opening the Network icon, you will see a list of available networks. This list may include some of the neighbors’ and nearby businesses’ wireless networks. Beside each name on the Available Networks list is the signal strength indicator (the bar graph).
5. If prompted, enter your Network Security Key (password) in the “Connect to Dialog box. The key may be provided by the person who set up the modem or by the Internet Service Provider.
6. Click on your web browser link. You will know you are successful with the setup when your web’s home page appears.

Older operating systems and Mac may have different installation steps. Consult your modem setup guide for further instructions.

Congratulations! You have completed your home Wi-Fi connections. But what if you are camping or at a park and want to access the internet? If your tablet can receive a cell signal at your location(and you have a data plan)you can configure your tablet to use it as a Wi-Fi modem.

This enables your friends and family who are with you to use your device as a mobile hotspot for their computers or tablets. Here’s how you get into the tablet setup to make this happen:

1. Start at the home screen of your tablet. Go to Menu, then Settings, Wireless and Networking, Mobile AP.
2. Check Mobile AP and follow the instructions.

OR, try the following:

Right click on the wireless icon in the windows status bar. Select “Open Network and Sharing Center”. Then, select the “Manage Wireless Networks” option. Be sure your network is listed. If it is not, click on the “add” tab and follow the steps to enter your computer’s information.
